Embarking on a New Adventure

As my days in school are over, for now, I embark on a journey of my own. Opening Haley Slaughter Reading Therapy LLC has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl. I always liked to play teacher in my mom's classroom. Yes, I said moms (there is a long history of teachers in my family). There were days when I would play "teacher" at home while doing my homework and even playing school with my friends. To tell you the truth, most of the friends I had/have ended up becoming teachers as well. Some are a little crazier than others teaching things like physics and calculus.  Opening HSRT is a work of heart. After knowing that dyslexia runs in families, or if you're like me it gallops, I started to want to know more about what dyslexia was. In my first year of teaching in a classroom, I had a student who was dyslexic and knew nothing about it. After doing my own research because none of my teaching classes or exams prepared me for having a dyslexic student in my c

Social Responsibility and a Biblical Worldview

Teachers play an important role in modeling behaviors including social responsibility. This involves in-school and out-of-school environment activities and conversations. Over the past decade, social media and personal technology have grown and connected individuals. This is also true of technology that has been implemented and designed for classroom use. Social responsibility is an issue that many people say needs to have tighter restrictions and monitoring. Teachers are obligated that when feasible they should engage in conversations about moral and responsible interactions along with conflict resolution, social and emotional learning, and collaborative communication. Students need these skills to effectively communicate, and become successful citizens and moral characters of God. Allowing students to view situations and problems that create cohesion and acceptance in the world around them is a valuable lesson. Students should understand that even behind a screen, it is still man

Security of Data in the Future

Security for data will be just as important today as it was yesterday, and even more so in the future. Security of the data we use that is both personal and for education should be secure so that both teachers, parents, and students can focus on the task at hand and not worry about where the data will end up. Now days, there are so many test that are taken online for standardized testing, teacher proficiency testing, online learning, and even daily student projects that have personal information in them. This kind of data and information should be secure not just for personal reasons, but for plagiarism and other breach of confidentiality reasons as well. With technology being the way most people communicate and learn, any information should be secure at home as well as at school. Teachers must understand and teach students how to professionally and ethically attain information and keep it secure. Safety refers to teachers’ knowledge, abilities, and attitudes to design and develops lea

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship provides information to teachers, parents, and especially students who use technology devices at home and at school. Many educators are hesitant to use technology in the classroom because they understand the risks associated with this type of learning. It is our responsibility, especially when asking students to complete assignments and assessments online, to actively observe and inform them on how to do this safely. Many students do not understand that a digital footprint is something that does not go away and for some, this could lead to repercussions both educationally and personally. Educating students and parents to where they feel comfortable is something that Digital Citizen can assist with. Digital citizenship is the ethical, moral, and responsible use of technology to ensure one’s own and others’ protection while collaborating in an increasingly digital, networked, and global society (Hawamdeh et al., 2022). This is where education has taken us, to a digi

Digital Rights

Every day  there is a growing need for something to be digitalized, and personal information is getting harder and harder to keep secure. We live in a world that no longer needs cash to pay for things or mail when we can email or chat on social media. Due to the widespread use of digital media and the development of internet technologies, access to information is easier than ever and behaviors of sharing information increase day-by-day ( Emali et al., 2020). Digital rights implore rights to those who publish and construct projects and ideas in social media, blogs, projects, phones, and personal computers for individual or professional use. Students and teachers should understand that with technology comes great responsibility. Putting something on the internet makes it visible to anyone. As educators, we should understand the risks of sharing things and posting our opinions, but also maintaining privacy for a personal life digitally.   Digital Citizen provides education to teachers,

Teaching Media Fluency

With the media being such a prevalent way to get messages across to people, especially students who are paying attention, it is vital that we educate them on media fluency. Students must be able to relate the information of the media effectively and efficiently through technology. This integration should be relevant through technology and communicated collaboratively. Therefore, the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information to be beneficial is important for people of all generations, especially students (Hunsapun & Chen, 2019). It is important for teachers to explain to students that they must understand the information presented and then interpret that so that all parties, teachers and students, understand and can present it without having a biased opinion. Presenting all of the facts is essential as well. Students should understand how to effectively seek information and be able to appl
