Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship provides information to teachers, parents, and especially students who use technology devices at home and at school. Many educators are hesitant to use technology in the classroom because they understand the risks associated with this type of learning. It is our responsibility, especially when asking students to complete assignments and assessments online, to actively observe and inform them on how to do this safely. Many students do not understand that a digital footprint is something that does not go away and for some, this could lead to repercussions both educationally and personally.

Educating students and parents to where they feel comfortable is something that Digital Citizen can assist with. Digital citizenship is the ethical, moral, and responsible use of technology to ensure one’s own and others’ protection while collaborating in an increasingly digital, networked, and global society (Hawamdeh et al., 2022). This is where education has taken us, to a digital and online learning environment. Students need to be aware of hazards and personal information put on the internet because it can also be traced back to them.

ISTE Standard 3 implies that educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world (ISTE, 2018). This ensures that educators are instructing students in the most positive way along with correctly and safely ensuring digital citizenship factors are being certainly modeled. Using this in correlation to digital citizenship guarantees that the students are interacting with digital environments and using it with accountability and self-confidence to develop as a student in the 21st century. Remember that for every action, there is a reaction.
